There are three distinct functions which The Healing Place provides in the community – services to adult victims and their non-offending family members, services to child victims and their non-offending family members, and prevention education.
For Adult Victims (including Teens)
- Crisis intervention – 24 hour crisis line - If you or someone you know has experienced any form of sexual violence, The Healing Place provides a 24-hour crisis line that offers help and support. Crisis Line: (828) 692-3931
- Hospital Accompaniment & Emergency Room Advocacy - Trained volunteer advocates are available 24 hours a day to provide support and information to victims of sexual assault at the hospital where they are being treated. The agency also provides post-examination clothing to victims in the emergency room.
- Counseling – Free & Confidential trauma focused counseling is available to victims and their non-offending family or support members. The counseling provides skills and tools to overcome the assault or abuse. Both individual and group sessions are offered, as well as evening appointments.
- Case Management - Each victim and his or her circumstances is different and The Healing Place recognizes the need for appropriate community referrals. A staff member will assist each victim as they work toward overcoming the sexual violence by identifying needs of the whole person and helping the victim access needed community resources.
- Judicial Support & Advocacy - The Healing Place offers advocacy and companionship during visits to law enforcement agencies, court proceedings, and other legal procedures. Court school is also available to familiarize the victim with court proceedings and to alleviate fear of the judicial process. An Advocate of The Healing Place will also help the victim with a Victim Impact Statement, if necessary.
- Victim’s Compensation - The Healing Place Advocate will help the victim determine eligibility and file the proper paperwork to receive compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, etc.
For Child Victims
- Forensic Interview in a Child-Friendly Environment - By interviewing the child at The Healing Place, in a child-friendly environment, the child is not traumatized again by telling his or her story over and over.
- Child Medical Evaluation – It is the hope that every child receives proper medical attention following child sexual abuse. The Healing Place Advocate will ensure that a Child Medical Exam takes place to address health issues. A Victim Advocate may facilitate the medical evaluation and may accompany the family to the medical provider.
- Case Management of non-DSS cases – including community referrals. The Healing Place provides case management services to the families from the date of disclosure until the case goes to court. The Advocate tracks each case as it proceeds through the judicial system including informing the parent of when the child will have to appear.
- Therapeutic Intervention - Free & Confidential trauma focused counseling is available to victims and their non-offending family or support members. The counseling provides skills and tools to overcome the assault or abuse. Evening appointments are also available.
- Case Review – Each child sexual abuse and felonious physical abuse case in Henderson County is reviewed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure that the child gets the services they need and that they are not traumatized further by the judicial process. Team members include the Department of Social Services, Henderson County Sheriff’s Department, Hendersonville Police Department, Fletcher Police Department the District Attorney’s office, Mountain Laurel, Hendersonville Pediatrics, Guardian Ad Litem, and The Healing Place.
Education Services
Sexual violence is a crime: It is any non-consensual sexual experience involving force, coercion, and/or fear. It can be perpetrated by men or women (together or separately) against both women and men. The Healing Place is committed to providing educational programming to reduce and prevent sexual violence in our community.
The Healing Place staff and volunteers present the “I Make Myself Safe” program in the public schools. Last year we made 255 presentations to 6,202 K, 1, 2, 5, 8, and 9 grade students. Last year, 89 children disclosed sexual abuse after taking part in the presentations.
The Healing Place offers educational programs at all grade levels, including collegiate. These age-specific programs are designed to teach students on a variety of issues, from ways to reduce and prevent sexual violence, to trusting their instincts and reporting an assault.
